  • ArcCatalog

ArcCatalog is a Metadata exploration and management tool that comes with ArcGIS (ESRI).
Helps the user to create metadata for datasets that are recognized by ArcInfo and stores the metadata in XML formats with FGDC standards. Several stylesheets are available and new ones can be customized to change the metadata appearance. It is also possible to create custom metadata editors using any compliant language such as Visual Basic. ArcCatalog automatically associate a metadata record directly with the GIS data it describes. ArcCatalog will automatically update metadata using the dataset’s current properties, such as the number of features, their extent, the coordinate systems and the geographic boundaries.

  • TKME

TKME is a standalone metadata entry tool which operates in the X-Windows environment. The user interface consists of a three paned window. The upper window shows the hierarchically arranged metadata element tree of the current metadata file and has a pull down menu bar for file, editing, and help operations. The middle window is used for entry and editing of metadata text which may follow the currently selected (in the upper window) metadata element. The bottom one-line window is used to display the precedence (mandatory, optional, repeatable etc.) of elements available on the Add menu and a short description of the function of the picks available on other menus. TKME will support local extensions if they are defined in a user supplied extension file. Help is available for each element and is identical in content to the 1998 CSDGM. The help file can be edited and enhanced to include local extensions and examples. TKME exports ASCII text metadata files that are parsed directly by a Metadata Parser program (MP) to check if the metadata complies with FGDC standards

  • ArcView Metadata Collector

The ArcView Metadata Collector is an easy-to-use application that helps the ArcView 3.x user create FGDC compliant metadata. The tool can create metadata for any data type supported by ArcView, including ArcInfo coverages, ArcView shapefiles, as well as any supported image formats. The application generates output in both text and html formats, but not xml formats. To use this application, it is advisable to have the "Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata" (green book) handy. If you are creating metadata for an ArcInfo coverage, there is the option of generating an INFO file that will become part of that coverage.

  • M3CAT

M³Cat is a multistandard and multilingual metadata cataloguing that works in web environment (offline) within Microsoft Internet Explorer. It allows users to configure their own metadata fields using already configured profiles, such as FGDC, NBII, GILS and ISO. Users can build their own profile of a standard, including language and cultural particularities. It allows users to store standard values (parameters) in pick lists, such as information about an organization, reference systems, projection systems, use templates that correspond to the type of data set they document and then take advantage of cataloguing aids such as Wizards, metadata inheritance between data sets and translation into another language to facilitate the development of metadata databases; Unlike ArcCatalog, ArcView and SMMS, M3CAT does not link automatically spatial information to the metadata. However it uses an integrated multi-projection, multi-datum geographic viewer to enter data set bounding co-ordinates. It supports both XML and SGML formats. Also it makes available an online validation of metadata elements according to each profile and an offline validation that verifies metadata completeness (mandatory fields).

  • SMMS

SMMS is a powerful metadata authoring and query tool that does not require any underlying GIS software on the desktop. SMMS software combines an advanced Federal Geographic Data Committee-compliant metadata editor available with an innovative data and metadata search and analysis tool. SMMS allows users to create, edit, view and publish standardized spatial metadata. ArcCatalog has an approach very similar to this tool, and the similarity is not coincidental. It uses Intergraph’s GeoMedia technology to automatically associate a metadata records with many popular GIS and graphic file formats. Once the association is established, SMMS can capture data and spatial attributes and other metadata elements directly from the dataset into the SMMS metadata record, reducing time spent on data entry and ensuring the accuracy of the metadata file Features of SMMS 5 include: MetaGate data catalog view of data and metadata; Automated metadata capture from data sources; Advanced searching, find data on your network; Sample metadata in the online help; Sample data, metadata, and templates provided to jump start your metadata program: Publish to html and generate a browse graphic. Complete support for the FGDC Biological Metadata profile.

  • Metadata Explorer + Metadata Editor

The metadata explorer is a freeware product developed within the CIFOR GIS Unit, to view metadata using a number of style sheets. You can brose to any file view the metadata or start creating and editing the metadata with the linked in editor (see metadata editor). The metadata explorer runs stand alone and does not required any proprietary software. The metadata is stored in the FGDC, ISO 19115 and Dublin Core 1.1 standard.

Metadata Utilities
  • MP

The MP (Metadata parser) program is a compiler for formal metadata designed to parse metadata, check the formal syntax, and is most frequently used to re-express the metadata in HTML, SGML, XML, text, and DIF formats for use in Clearinghouse, metadata sharing, and on web servers. You will need mp to validate (check the structure) and generate alternate forms of metadata. This program is a compiler to parse formal metadata, checking the syntax against the FGDC Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata and generating output suitable for viewing with a web browser or text editor.

  • CNS

The CNS program is an optional metadata pre-parser designed for people who have been using other software to create metadata, and now want to put their records into the mainstream of the National Geospatial Data Clearinghouse. It is a program that should only be applied where metadata are not properly indented (in the text form) or if the element tags happen to include numbers on them (not permitted in the Profile). It reformats the metadata to be readable by mp. This is not a simple operation, however, and without careful work, some information will not be properly transferred. Consequently, cns creates a file for the leftover pieces of the input--those lines that could not be properly placed in the parseable output. cns is a metadata preprocessor which processes metadata with varying degrees of conformance to the CSDGM (1998) into an output which is more compatible with mp. This is especially useful for Clearinghouses which may collect metadata from source agencies producing metadata differing in format because of the metadata tool or template employed at the each agency, or because the agency metadata profile differs from the CSDGM

  • Metascribe

The NOAA Coastal Services Center's MetaScribe tool is designed to reduce significantly the labor required to produce metadata compliant with the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata (CSDGM). This software tool takes advantage of the fact that, within a collection of records for a given data type, the records are generally very similar in content, with only a few fields or phrases changing from one record to the next. MetaScribe delivers the greatest savings when used to create a collection of similar records. In fact, this tool is not appropriate for the creation of multiple metadata records with little redundant content.

  • Metadata Editor (plug-in for ArcCatalog)

The metadata editor is a custom designed tool to ease the metadata creation procedure. The editor consists of only seven themes with a total of 18 mandatory input fields. When run as a plug-in for ArcCatalog, certain fields are automatically filed in. When the user saves the metadata, the program will automatically check if all the fields are filed in. If there are errors or empty fields, a pop-up screen will appear listing the problem or empty fields. Only when all the fields are correctly filled in, the metadata can be published to any compliant online metadata service (like FSIC). The metadata is stored in the FGDC and ISO 19115 standard.

  • Batch Metadata Export Utility

This is a VB application in ArcCatalog to batch export the XML metadata for Coverages and/or Shapefiles as HTML, TXT, & SGML files. It places the exported metadata in the same directory as the selected datasets and gives them the same name as the dataset but with different extensions. The HTML will be laid out in the same way as the currently selected stylesheet in ArcCatalog.
