Asian Tsunami 2004
The unprecedented nature, scale
of impact, and the vast number of people in the many affected countries
requiring immediate and long-term assistance, has highlighted the
essential importance of geospatial data. Strong national spatial data
infrastructures are crucial for early response and coordination of
emergency services, as well as longer-term reconstruction and rehabilitation
planning. National governments and agencies, international relief
organizations, local NGO's, and others involved in relief efforts
all require up-to-date information and good maps.
Many of the CGIAR Centers work
in the affected regions, and are now actively involved in providing
assistance. The International Water Management Institute (IWMI),
based in Colombo, Sri Lanka, has been working with MapAction UK and
the Government of Sri Lanka to provide maps, ground truthing, and
daily geospatially referenced information to support relief efforts
(see below for maps). The WorldFish Center in Penang, Malayasia
is focusing on impact on aquatic resources and biodiversity in the
region, and the World Agroforestry Center (SEA), CIFOR, and
WorldFish are coordinating the CGIAR response in Indonesia.
Below are some links to Tsunami
relevant geospatial information sources. If you know of more
sources, please let us know and we will add these to our list.

ReliefWeb is a project of the United
Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. This
project includes a specific map center, which contains a large collection
of maps.

Thai Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment
(MONROE)
This Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment
(MONROE) of Thailand in collaboration with ESRI team developed
an ArcIMS software-based Web application to publish the geospatial
data of the damage area in the southern part of Thailand. The
data published includes the 2003 color orthophotos from the MOAC,
orthophotos of the damage area from RTAF, and ArcData Thairoad
as the basemap.
Additional layers included disaster operation centers, information
centers, routes from transportation centers to disaster scenes
and operation centers, and accommodations. This Web mapping application
also provides the means to input the position of bodies discovered
in the field, body collection points, and locations of essential
facilities.

Indonesia RS/GIS Forum
As part of the direct response to the Tsunami,
a group of remote sensing and GIS experts working in a range of
government and non-government organizations in Indonesia and having
established a network called 'RS/GIS Forum', took the initiative
to do collective actions in compiling, processing and analyzing
geospatial data of Aceh and North Sumatra, Indonesia.
