CALL FOR PARTNERSHIP on Wetland Mapping and Inventory

Presented at the 13th Meeting of the Scientific and Technical Review Panel (STRP) of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands
(Gland, Switzerland, 30 May – 2 June 2006)

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, through the Coastal Panel of the Global Terrestrial Observing System (C-GTOS), and the International Water Management Institute (IWMI), an International Organization Partner of the Ramsar Convention, have called for a mechanism allowing for the coordination of institutions and organizations with an active interest in wetlands mapping and inventory for monitoring and assessment.  A Type II Partnership is therefore proposed, and will be constituted, to allow for an inclusive, yet structured, membership around a core network of institutions engaged in ongoing mapping and inventory activities. The initial establishment will be ensured by FAO, and in particular by C-GTOS and the Secretariat of the Global Terrestrial Observing System (GTOS) within the Environment and Natural Service (SDRN), with IWMI technical support.  The work of the Partnership will be developed within the framework of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands and other relevant biodiversity-related conventions. In this respect, the Scientific and Technical Review Panel (STRP) of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands and its Observer Organizations has been invited to provide views and comments on the overall concept of the Partnership and on the eventual identification of a core network of partners to further pursue its idea, mission and structure.  A preliminary outline of the justification, mission, objectives and key-results areas of the Partnership was provided for discussion at the 13th STRP Meeting, and is available by clicking the link below:
